Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and, if you’re anything like me, you’re already thinking about what’s going to be on your table that day. No, I’m not talking about the food (although who doesn’t love a good pumpkin pie?). I’m talking about your décor!

Creating a beautiful and inviting table is one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving. But as an interior designer, I certainly feel the pressure to impress! And in the age of social media, I bet you do too! We all know the details of our Thanksgiving tablescapes will inevitably end up on Instagram so we want to make sure that when they do, they look good!

Here are a few tips on how to make sure your Thanksgiving table is Instaworthy—no filter needed!

Choose a color scheme. Deciding on a color scheme for your Thanksgiving table set up is a great starting point for the rest of your design. Whether it be the clean and classic look of whites and neutrals, the seasonally appropriate orange and brown, or the elegant blend of black and gold, let your color scheme set the tone for your table. And the good news? There’s no need to break the bank to achieve your desired look! Use what you already have at home—dishes, linens, flatware—to develop your color scheme and purchase small, inexpensive accent pieces to tie it all together.

Create a centerpiece. There’s nothing more deserving of a good Instagram shot than a beautiful centerpiece. And with plenty of seasonal inspiration, you can easily create a unique and elegant focal point for your Thanksgiving table. Elements like flowers, leaves, pumpkins, pinecones, and even cotton are great for a more natural and rustic look while items like candles, glassware, and glittery accents are perfect for a little elegance. Consider combining elements of both styles for your centerpiece, but don’t overdo it! Remember: sometimes less is more!

Get creative with your place cards. Whether you’re hosting a meal for twenty or a small gathering for your family of five, places cards are a great way to make the people around your table feel special. Consider how you can get creative to welcome your guests! If you opt for the traditional handwritten place cards, choose a fun pattern or paper to make them a little more festive. Try incorporating elements from your centerpiece into your place cards to tie your design together. Or purchase small gifts for your guests to take home and place them at their table settings for a sweet surprise. Your place cards will definitely add a personal touch to your table!

Add some layers. An easy way to make your Thanksgiving table more interesting is to add a little layering. Stacking your dishes at each place setting is an simple way to start. Place your salad plates or small bowls on top of your main plate and position your flatware or linens alongside. Have a set of patterned or fine china you’ve been waiting to use? Mix and match it with your traditional dinnerware to create a little more texture to your table. Layering is an easy way to use what you have to make your table a little more dynamic.

Bring your people. Your table may look incredible and your food taste great, but what’s Thanksgiving without your people? The best adornments to your Thanksgiving table are the people sitting around it. They bring the life and light that adds a little sparkle to your décor. So as you place the final touches on your Thanksgiving table and get ready to take that Instaworthy shot, make sure you feature the faces of your most valuable accessories: your friends and family.
